I focus on winning our clients' civil litigation and family court cases here at Smith & Raver LLP. I typically work in Hennepin County and the Twin Cities area, but occasionally take cases farther away. While some of my work is consulting and drafting legal documents such as contracts, I primarily appear in court with clients in contested hearings and trials. At the suggestion of a client and friend of the firm, I post some of our trial court outcomes on our
News and Results page. I am pleased to have helped produce positive outcomes both at trial, and in pre-trial hearings. In each of those diverse
cases, a common factor to success has been helping clients new to the legal system understand the parlance and procedure of litigation. As part of Smith & Raver LLP, I've been privileged to work on
patient privacy cases alongside my friends at
Clear Protection, sponsored by the
Muscala Chemical HealthClinic.
Outside of my work at Smith & Raver LLP, I currently volunteer on my local
Human Rights Commission, and by responding to public legal questions on
Yahoo! Answers and
AllExperts.

Prior to forming Smith & Raver LLP with my partner and William Mitchell classmate Rick, I worked as a solo practitioner and for large firms, such as
Faegre & Benson, and smaller practices, like Fetterly & Gordon.
I graduated from William Mitchell College of Law in 1995. While studying there, I took as many internships as possible to get more time in court, such as a judicial internship with Judge John Connelly in St. Paul, and prosecuting felonies at the Ramsey County Attorney's office.
I earned my undergraduate degree in English with a Chemistry minor from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire in 1992, and then moved back to Minnesota to study law where I was born. My father followed my grandfather into the newspaper business, and I grew up in several midwestern small towns as we moved throughout his career.
